Artist Statement

Bethany Janes

Music paints itself through me. It has been a lifelong connection—every genre, every mood. Looking around at a concert and feeling the way music brings people from all walks of life together, to me, is the closest thing to heaven on earth. I’ll never be a rock star—but if I can reflect even a glimmer of that sense of humanity on a canvas, I’ve done what I set out to do. And the crazier the world gets, the more we need that connection.

I don’t paint to become everyone’s cup of tea—I paint to connect. If someone looks at my work and feels something, even if it’s not the feeling I intended, that is why I do this.

When someone asks how I’m doing and I say, “living the dream,” this is the dream. The dream is collaborating with musicians to transform sound into visual experience. Creating cover art, merch designs, and studio pieces. Painting music live on stage in real time. Showing someone what their favorite song looks like, or giving someone the image of their late father walking them down the aisle on their wedding day.

I set up my easel at local music events, or on the beach, and that’s all I need. Songs reveal themselves, and my hands respond. Sometimes my intuition takes me somewhere abstract, sometimes to a portrait or a landscape.

My soul becomes tangible through painting. My work now lives in the studios of some of my favorite musicians. It has given me the honor of being face-to-face and sharing my art with the artists who inspired me.

Art is vulnerable, but there is no real connection without vulnerability.

With love,

BJ
